Boarding schools with the Advanced Placement programme (AP) offer students a two-pronged advantage as they move into the future beyond high school. The best universities look favourably on advanced placement courses as well as graduates of boarding schools. This is a simple fact.
Consult with each of the boarding schools listed here to learn about their AP courses.
The Advanced Placement program is administered by the office of the College Board. They determine course guidelines and offer a variety of other services and programs that support or augment the program implementation. Advanced Placement courses can be applied as university credits, depending in part on the university's policies. If you want to learn more or you are simply unfamiliar with AP, you can learn more at ap.ca.
"I shied away from psychology AP because I wasn't too keen on it, and I'm not that big on European history. But I enjoy the sciences, which is why I focused on that area."
—Alex, West Island College
Not only does the combination of AP with boarding give you an unfair advantage as you apply for university, there are numerous other benefits to the program. Having AP courses on your high school transcript opens up unique opportunities. Of course, students can apply AP courses to their degree but in an actual example, this can mean something like taking on a double major in university while having the same workload as regular students. The AP program opens this and numerous other possibilities.
The AP program also offers flexibility, so you can select the courses that appeal to you and will help with your development. In this way, you are not necessarily forced into taking courses at a difficulty level you are not comfortable with. Participation in AP courses will inspire you to go higher; students find these challenging and invigorating. Each boarding school has details on its implementation of the program you'll need to think about as you investigate schools.
