Boarding School Basketball Programs

Not every graduate of a boarding school basketball program is going to turn out to be a Steve Nash... but if you are Steve Nash, you're glad you went to a school with a strong basketball program. Nash, one of nine players in NBA history to win back-to-back MVP awards, is a grad of St. Michaels University School.

Nash credits boarding school with helping him grow personally, in ways that uniquely prepared him for fame and life in the public eye. St. Michaels' boarding population "gave us an understanding and a cultural sensitivity. To be exposed to that diversity gave us a need to kind of go out there and have a thirst for the world."

"You have to co-operate really well to make it work. I've learned so much sport here. I never played rugby or basketball before I came here."
– Ian, Country Day School

St. Michaels is one of more than 50 boarding schools across Canada with a basketball program. In addition to guys' programs, almost all the all-girls' schools in Canada have women's basketball programs. Kids who go to boarding schools for basketball and other sports programs often find they excel in other sports they had never thought of before.

Basketball programs at these schools actually benefit from the fact that these are boarding schools. As one director of admissions puts it: "We attract kids who are driven to excel."

"Being part of a team and sharing a common goal gives us a sense of pride in the school and ourselves."
– Andrea, Stanstead College
